Arsenal team news ahead of Atlético Madrid second leg: Timber blow but Ødegaard boost

Mikel Arteta’s pre-match press conference reveals Arsenal absentees and doubts ahead of the Gunners’ crucial second leg against Atlético 

Arsenal return to the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night for the decisive second leg of their Champions League semi-final against Atlético Madrid, with the tie finely balanced at 1-1.

Mikel Arteta’s side know a strong performance at home will be required to reach the final, particularly against a typically resilient Atlético outfit.

There had been some uncertainty surrounding the availability of several key players after recent knocks and absences, with Arteta keeping his cards close to his chest in the build-up.

However, clarity has now emerged following the manager’s pre-match press conference, offering a clearer picture of who will be involved.

Ødegaard and Havertz return as Timber misses out

Arteta confirmed that both Martin Ødegaard and Kai Havertz are fit enough to be included in the squad for the second leg.

“They are available, both in the squad,” Arteta said. “[It’s] great, because we need options, we need the capacity to play different games tomorrow, whether it’s from the start or after.

“So it’s really, really good news for us to have them both back.”

Ødegaard had been a doubt after picking up a knee issue during last week’s first leg in Madrid, which subsequently ruled him out of the 3-0 Premier League win over Fulham. His return is a timely boost given his influence in midfield and leadership in big European fixtures.

Havertz, meanwhile, also comes back into contention after being forced off with a groin problem in the narrow win over Newcastle earlier this month. His versatility gives Arteta additional attacking options, whether from the start or off the bench.

There is less positive news in defence, however. Jurrien Timber remains unavailable and has not yet returned to training on the grass at London Colney, with the Dutch international nearing two months out through injury.

Mikel Merino is also still sidelined and will play no part in the second leg.
