Atlético Madrid edged into the Copa del Rey final despite a 3-0 second-leg defeat to Barcelona, progressing 4-3 on aggregate after surviving a dramatic comeback attempt at Camp Nou.
It was a high-intensity but largely respectful encounter between two rivals who have shared some fierce battles in recent years.
After the final whistle, Atlético captain Koke and head coach Diego Simeone were quick to acknowledge Barcelona’s performance, singling out Raphinha and Pedri for praise after a display that nearly overturned the tie.
Yet it was Antoine Griezmann who unexpectedly grabbed the headlines.
Shortly after the match, the French forward posted a photo from the final whistle on social media. The image showed Griezmann standing upright while two Barcelona players, one on either side of him, lay on the turf in visible disappointment following their elimination. The caption read: “Does this photo go too hard?”
To some supporters, particularly those in Catalonia, it appeared to be an unnecessary provocation, and Griezmann’s history with Barcelona only added fuel to the reaction.
The forward spent two seasons at the club after his high-profile move from Atlético in 2019, earning one of the highest salaries in Europe at the time but failing to consistently meet the lofty expectations placed upon him.

The backstory behind the caption
However, there was more context behind the post than initially met the eye.
On March 17, 2025, ahead of a league meeting between the sides – a 2-4 Barcelona victory – the Catalan club shared a pre-match image on their own social media channels.
The photo showed the Barcelona squad in a huddle, with Griezmann, then back at Atlético, pictured prominently in the foreground. The caption accompanying that image read: “This photo hits hard.”

Griezmann’s recent post appears to mirror that wording, suggesting it was a pointed response rather than a spontaneous act of disrespect.
While the timing will still have irritated Barcelona supporters, particularly given the painful nature of their cup exit, the caption seems rooted more in footballing banter than outright hostility.
With speculation mounting over Griezmann’s future – rumours of a potential move to Orlando City continue to circulate – the Frenchman’s focus remains on silverware.
Atlético are now just one game away from their first trophy in five years, and Griezmann will be determined to ensure his final chapter in Madrid, if it is indeed nearing its end, concludes on a high.
