The Republic of Ireland national football team are looking to draw inspiration from their recent heroics as they prepare for a crucial World Cup play-off clash with the Czech Republic.
Assistant coach John O’Shea has stressed the importance of reconnecting with the spirit and belief that drove Ireland to a dramatic victory over Hungary in November – a match made infamous by Troy Parrott’s stunning hat-trick.
That 2-3 win in Budapest, on the back of an impressive draw with Portugal, secured Ireland’s place in the play-offs and reignited hopes of reaching a first World Cup since 2002.
O’Shea believes the key now is ensuring those memories translate into performance on the pitch in Prague.
“Without a doubt, but you have to reinforce that [idea of momentum] straightaway,” O’Shea said.
“The boss [Heimir Hallgrimsson] had a meeting with the boys this morning and we’ll reinforce that in the training sessions and video meetings we’ll have over the next couple of days to transport themselves back to that moment in Hungary, but then fast forward to what’s ahead of us in Prague, tough opposition but one we can have success against.”
Ireland aiming to build on momentum
Ireland’s away form has often been questioned, but the Hungary win proved what they are capable of when performing at their peak. The former Manchester United defender believes the squad can rise to the occasion again.
There are no new injury concerns following the latest club fixtures, providing a timely boost ahead of such a crucial encounter.
“The boys are in a good place,” O’Shea added.
“Training today was almost reminding me of that cup final scenario. Everyone’s wanting to get into the team, the intensity, the noise and the atmosphere around the boys is brilliant.
“There’s a quiet confidence in the group growing together, it’s great to see but we know there’s a lot of hard work to come.”
Who will Ireland play if they beat Czech Republic
Victory in Prague for Ireland would set up a play-off final against either Denmark or North Macedonia on 31 March, with a place at the World Cup within touching distance.
Denmark are strong favourites to overcome North Macedonia given their quality coupled with home support, although their visitors have proven to be tough opposition in recent years, notably defeating Italy away in the World Cup playoff semi-final in March 2022.
In the current FIFA World Rankings, Denmark are in 21st place while North Macedonia are 66th.
