Arne Slot provides latest on Alexander Isak, Jeremie Frimpong and Joe Gomez before Liverpool face Nottingham Forest on Sunday

Liverpool head to Nottingham Forest on Sunday with Arne Slot juggling long-term absentees and players edging closer to returns as the season enters a crucial stretch.

The Reds boss faced the media ahead of the away clash and offered updates on several key names, including Alexander Isak, whose rehabilitation is progressing but remains in its final stages.

Isak nearing group return but no rush

Slot confirmed that Isak has returned to the pitch as part of his recovery programme, describing it as an important psychological and physical milestone.

“It’s nice for him to go on the pitch and nice to see him there,” Slot said. “You do know you’re in your final stages of rehab. Next step is of course doing work with the ball and then going into the group and it takes a while before you’re ready to play.”

The Liverpool head coach stressed that patience remains essential. While modern recovery timelines are shorter than in the past, Slot warned that the final stages can still be unpredictable.

“Let’s not put a timescale on it but it’s clear he will be available if things go as planned this season,” he explained, suggesting a possible return to group training around the international break – potentially late March or early April. However, that would not necessarily mean an immediate return to starting action.

Slot admitted Liverpool have yet to see the best of Isak since his arrival but believes next season could showcase a different version of the forward.

Frimpong out, Gomez ready, Endo faces lengthy spell

Jeremie Frimpong will not be involved against Forest, though there is hope he could return next week if his recovery continues without issue.

“Jeremie will not be involved this week, we hope he will be involved next week if things go as plans,” Slot said.

Wataru Endo, meanwhile, faces a far longer spell on the sidelines, with the club still unsure of a precise timeframe for his recovery.

“Wata will be out for a long time, we don’t know exactly how long.”

There was more positive news regarding Joe Gomez, with Slot confirming the defender is fit and ready to start if selected.

“I think Joe [Gomez] is ready to start, yes he is.”
