Mikel Arteta hopeful over Declan Rice, admits defender ruled out, and Martin Ødegaard a doubt

Mikel Arteta provides Arsenal fitness update before Brighton clash as Ben White ruled out and Declan Rice improves

Arsenal travel to Brighton on Wednesday night looking to preserve, or extend, their four-point lead at the top of the Premier League table, with Manchester City applying pressure behind them.

The Gunners strengthened their position with a 2-1 victory over Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, but there are fresh fitness concerns heading into the midweek test on the south coast.

Mikel Arteta confirmed that Kai Havertz is being monitored after only partially training.

“Yeah, especially Kai, he’s done a part of the session, so we’ll wait and see if he is okay,” the Arsenal boss explained.

Havertz has been an important figure in recent weeks, and his availability could prove significant against a Brighton side that typically dominates possession at home.

Club captain Martin Ødegaard is also being assessed ahead of the visit to Brighton.

“Martin is the other one, we’ll see,” Arteta added, suggesting a late decision will be made on the captain’s involvement.

Ben White ruled out, Rice improving

There was more definitive news regarding Ben White, who will not make the trip.

“And Ben, yes Ben is not available,” Arteta confirmed.

However, the update was more encouraging concerning Declan Rice, who appears to have responded well after concerns over his condition.

“[Rice] I hope so, he was much better today,” Arteta said, indicating optimism that the midfielder will be ready to start.

David Raya is also fit and available. “David is good, good to go,” the manager added.

Martin Zubimendi workload managed

Arteta also took the opportunity to praise Martin Zubimendi’s contribution this season, highlighting how carefully Arsenal have managed his minutes amid a demanding schedule.

“I think for his first year, he’s having a great season,” Arteta said. “We have [managed his workload] for the whole season.

“He’s never played this amount of games ever in his history. On top of that we have a World Cup. They’re going to break records [for matches played].”

With the fixture calendar intensifying and silverware within reach, Arsenal’s squad management will be crucial in the coming weeks.
