Eddie Howe provides Newcastle injury update before Manchester United test as Jacob Ramsey recovers but illness hits squad

Newcastle United head into Wednesday night’s clash with Manchester United under pressure, with Eddie Howe’s side winless in six of their last seven Premier League matches.

The Magpies slipped to a 2-3 home defeat against Everton at the weekend, a result that leaves them 13th in the table and searching for momentum. In contrast, Manchester United arrive at St James’ Park in confident mood, having won five of their last six games under interim head coach Michael Carrick.

Howe, however, is focused firmly on his own squad’s condition. and there was mixed news from the treatment room.

Jacob Ramsey, who scored against Everton, picked up a knock during that match but appears to have recovered quickly.

“Jacob Ramsey was in yesterday, trained fine so a quick recovery from him,” Howe confirmed.

That update will come as a relief given Ramsey’s influence in midfield and his ability to drive Newcastle forward during a difficult run.

There is, however, a fresh concern regarding Nick Woltemade. The forward has endured a frustrating start to 2026, failing to score in the Premier League since netting in the 2-2 draw with Chelsea earlier in December.

Now illness has disrupted his preparations, causing concern that this may have spread in the Newcastle dressing room.

“There’s an illness, potentially, in the squad because Nick Woltemade has gone down ill and we haven’t seen him for a couple of days but we will give him every chance for tomorrow,” Howe revealed.

With Newcastle already struggling for consistency in front of goal, Woltemade’s availability will be closely monitored ahead of kick-off.

Tino Livramento is edging nearer to a return but is unlikely to feature.

“Tino Livramento is getting closer and closer. This game possibly comes too soon for him, we are desperate for him to become available,” Howe added.

Howe calls for proactive response

Despite recent setbacks, Howe insists Newcastle will not retreat into caution against an in-form Manchester United side.

“Our intention in every game is to get into them, be a proactive team rather than a reactive team. Attack them,” he said.

With form dipping and pressure rising, Wednesday’s encounter offers Newcastle a timely opportunity to rediscover their edge in front of a demanding St James’ Park crowd.
