Robert Lewandowski future: Barcelona president drops major hint amid MLS interest

Joan Laporta wants Robert Lewandowski to stay at Barcelona beyond his current contract but there are conditions

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has given a major update on how he sees Robert Lewandowski’s future at the Blaugrana. There has been plenty of speculation about the Polish striker’s situation in recent months and he has been strongly linked with a move away from the Catalan capital.

As things stand, Lewandowski will become a free agent in July when his Barcelona contract expires. Even at 37-years-old, however, the forward won’t be short of suitors and it now seems that remaining in Barcelona could be a serious option.

Speaking to RAC1 and Catalunya Ràdio on Tuesday after being re-elected as club president at the weekend, Laporta expressed his desire for Lewandowski to remain, but he did indicate that the Poland international would have to accept his role in the squad.

Barcelona will make Lewandowski a conditional offer

“Lewandowski deserves a renewal because he wanted to join,” said Laporta.

“If he wants to stay, being aware of his role, we’ll make him a renewal offer.

“With Ferran [Torres] and Lewandowski, the position is covered but if we have to strengthen, we will.”

Laporta did go on to stress, however, that he would not be personally involved in the negotiations as these would be handled by Rafa Yuste and Deco as he cannot officially become involved until July, despite his remaining in post. He insisted, though, that the club wants him to stay.

“We would like him to stay but it depends on what he wants,” said Laporta.

“He came in at a difficult time and he has helped us a lot and we want him to stay.”

Lewandowski keen on staying at Barcelona

Although there have been rumours linking Lewandowski to a host of clubs this season, the most recent reports in Spain suggest his priority is to remain at Barça. Mundo Deportivo have reported that the 37-year-old is willing to take a salary cut in order to remain where he and his family are content.

Should both sides fail to come to an agreement on the financials and Lewandowski’s role in the squad, however, the striker is likely to have plenty of other options.

Juventus are reported to have joined Saudi Arabian clubs in taking a keen interest, while his wife has already visited Chicago, fuelling speculation that a move to Chicago Fire in MLS could be on the cards.
