Luka Vušković has drawn extraordinary praise from Lothar Matthäus after the Tottenham loanee delivered a commanding performance against Bayern Munich, reinforcing his growing reputation as one of Europe’s most promising young defenders.

The 18-year-old centre back played a decisive role as Hamburger SV secured a 2–2 draw with the German champions, scoring the equaliser and earning Man of the Match honours.

Against elite opposition, Vušković showed composure, authority and tactical awareness that belied his age, prompting an emphatic reaction from one of German football’s most decorated figures.

Speaking on Sky Sport Germany’s live broadcast alongside Wolff Fuss shortly before half-time, Lothar Matthäus could hardly believe what he was witnessing.

“Just look at him! That rascal at 18! 18 years old! As seasoned as someone who’s already played in three World Cups and won three Champions League titles,” Matthäus said.

His admiration only grew after the final whistle, with the former Ballon d’Or winner singling Vušković out as the standout performer on the pitch.

“For me, he was the player of the match,” he added. “What he achieved in defense today, how cleverly he played. And then he scored the goal. The personality he already exudes. I believe that something truly great has not only developed there, but that something truly, truly great is yet to come.”

Matthäus highlights intelligence that sets Vušković apart

Matthäus went further, focusing on the qualities that cannot be captured by statistics alone. He highlighted Vušković’s anticipation, organisation and decision-making, traits rarely seen in defenders so early in their careers.

“It’s not just the goal stats, but how he plays, how he organises, how he cleverly takes two steps forward to catch [Harry] Kane offside,” he continued.

“He sees all of that in advance. I didn’t see what he sees at 18 when I was 30. I’m exaggerating to say how intelligent this player is. It’s not just about aerial duels, tackles, and a goal or an assist.

“It’s about so much more. He’s someone at the back who can organise and direct a defence. You rarely find that.”

For Vušković, the praise carried enormous significance. The Croatian teenager admitted he was almost overwhelmed by Matthäus’s words.

“Of course, such praise from him means a lot to me. I don’t even know what else I can say. I really don’t. Just to thank him. It means a lot to me. It motivates me to keep going,” he said.

Looking ahead, Vušković has addressed questions about his long-term future. Speaking to BILD, he made clear that any major decision will wait until after the next World Cup.

“We’ll decide after the World Cup what happens next, what’s best for me,” he noted.
