Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimarães sidelined for months with hamstring injury, raising questions about Premier League and Brazil squad availability

Newcastle United have suffered a major blow with the confirmation that Bruno Guimarães will be sidelined for at least two months due to a hamstring injury, according to ESPN Brazil. The midfielder, a key figure under Eddie Howe, is expected to miss a significant period of action in the Premier League.

Guimarães, who has been a driving force for Newcastle this season, will reportedly soon travel to Brazil to undergo rehabilitation under national team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar.

The move will allow Brazil national team staff to closely monitor the midfielder’s recovery, though it also rules him out of competitive matches for the club during the recovery period.

The 26-year-old has been central to Newcastle’s midfield this season, contributing nine goals and six assists in 35 appearances. His absence will be keenly felt at St James’ Park, where he has established himself as both a captain and a fan favourite.

Eddie Howe had recently confirmed that Guimarães had suffered an injury in the closing stages of Newcastle’s 1-2 win against Tottenham on Tuesday, but did not have a time frame to provide.

Now, reports from Brazil indicate that the midfielder will miss at least eight weeks of action, ruling him out of the national team’s March friendlies with France and Croatia.

Which matches will Bruno Guimarães miss?

With a two-month setback, Bruno Guimarães is set to miss a host of important matches for Newcastle both domestically and in Europe:

  • Aston Villa (a), February 14 – FA Cup (fourth round)
  • Qarabag (a), February 18 – Champions League (playoff, first leg)
  • Manchester City (a), February 21 – Premier League
  • Qarabag (h), February 24 – Champions League (playoff, second leg)
  • Everton (h), February 28 – Premier League
  • Manchester United (h), March 4, Premier League
  • Chelsea (a), March 14 – Premier League
  • Sunderland (h), March 22 – Premier League
  • Crystal Palace (a), April 4 – Premier League

This injury also impacts Brazil’s preparations ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Guimarães was expected to start in the friendlies against France and Croatia in late March in Boston and Orlando.

With him out, Ancelotti will need to explore alternative midfield options, potentially giving other players a chance to stake their claim before the World Cup squad is finalised.
