Calum McFarlane backs Cole Palmer to rediscover Chelsea form in final European push

The Chelsea interim coach dismisses concerns over the midfielder’s dip in goals as the club prepares for a decisive trip to Nottingham Forest

Chelsea interim coach Calum McFarlane has publicly defended Cole Palmer’s dip in form, stressing that the 23-year-old remains “one of the best in the world” ahead of Monday’s crucial meeting with Nottingham Forest.

The atmosphere at Stamford Bridge remains charged with expectation as Chelsea look to build on the confidence gained from their 1-0 FA Cup semi-final victory over Leeds United.

The club’s chase for a Champions League spot has faced a significant blow in recent weeks after an awful run of form that has seen them drop to eighth place, 10 points from fifth place, making a Europa League place more realistic.

It has now been addressed by the coaching staff that Palmer’s lower goal return this season, with just 10 in all competitions, is a hurdle the player is actively working to overcome.

McFarlane was quick to highlight that the midfielder’s struggles are tied to a first-of-its-kind physical setback for the player.

“It’s been a difficult period for Cole,” said McFarlane. “He’s had the first injury that he’s pretty much ever had in his career and he’s had to learn how to deal with that.

“I think there are obviously games where he can impact more, but there have also been a lot of occasions when he’s created a lot of good chances for players, and he can’t control whether they’re finished.”

World Cup pressure and international scrutiny

The conversation around Palmer has extended beyond West London, reaching the office of England manager Thomas Tuchel.

With the 2026 World Cup approaching this summer, Palmer’s recent appearances in a draw against Uruguay and a defeat to Japan at Wembley have left his international standing in question. Despite this, McFarlane remains convinced of the player’s world-class status.

“I do think he’s had some really good games in the last three months, and it’s just a case of building that consistency. I’m really pleased with Cole. He shows us his talent every single day, his energy and his enthusiasm to play, and he’s still a top player, one of the best in the world for me,” the manager insisted.

As Chelsea prepare for the final three games of the campaign, the focus is on ensuring Palmer can find the “passion, aggression and fight” required to impact the biggest moments. McFarlane concluded his defence with a clear message to both the Chelsea board and Thomas Tuchel.

“So I have no concerns over Cole being ready to impact games from now to the end of the season and, hopefully, in the World Cup in big moments for England.”
