FC Porto coach Francesco Farioli is reportedly expected to overhaul his starting eleven for Thursday’s Europa League quarter-final against Nottingham Forest to ensure his key men are fresh for a tightening title race.

The shift comes in the wake of a dramatic 2-2 draw against Famalicão last Saturday, where a 99th-minute equaliser from Rodrigo Pinheiro severely dented the Dragons’ momentum.

While Porto still occupy the top spot in the Primeira Liga with 73 points, their lead over Sporting CP has been trimmed to five points, with the Lisbon giants holding a crucial game in hand.

With a domestic trip to Estoril looming this Sunday, Farioli is reportedly wary of overextending a squad that has shown signs of physical fatigue.

According to reports in A Bola, the Italian tactician believes a quick turnaround necessitates a split strategy, prioritising domestic stability over the first leg of their European tie at the Estádio do Dragão.

The most pressing concern for the medical staff involves teenage sensation Rodrigo Mora. The playmaker was forced off during the first half against Famalicão after suffering what was initially feared to be a serious muscle tear.

Subsequent tests have confirmed the issue was a muscle spasm rather than a rupture, but the club is managing his recovery with extreme caution.

Mora has been undergoing specialised gym work and remains under close supervision, making his involvement against Forest highly unlikely. Farioli is also expected to rest midfield mainstays Alan Varela and Victor Froholdt, both of whom have shouldered a heavy workload during Porto’s impressive run this season.

Midfield trio ready for European opportunity

As per A Bola, in the absence of the regular starters, the European stage will be entrusted to a fresh midfield trident of Pablo Rosario, Gabri Veiga, and Seko Fofana.

Rosario returns to the fold after being rested for the Famalicão draw. The Dominican international had previously endured a gruelling travel schedule while on duty for his national team and is now considered to be at peak physical condition.

He will be joined by Gabri Veiga, who missed the last league outing through suspension and is eager to reassert his influence in the centre of the park.

Completing the trio is the Ivorian powerhouse Fofana, who was arguably Porto‘s standout performer during the disappointing draw last weekend.
