Eddie Howe has given Newcastle supporters a clearer picture of the squad’s condition ahead of Tuesday night’s visit to Tottenham Hotspur.
Speaking to the media on the eve of the match, the Newcastle head coach addressed several key injury concerns that will shape his selection for the trip to North London.
The most immediate focus was on Lewis Miley, whose availability remains uncertain after suffering what Howe described as a lingering dead leg.
The teenage midfielder picked up the issue after taking what Howe called a “nasty bang”, and while the injury was initially expected to settle quickly, it has lasted longer than anticipated.
Howe confirmed that Miley will be assessed again on Monday, leaving the door open for a possible return against Spurs.
“Miley I need to see today, we’ll get another update on his progress. He got a nasty bang to his leg, so it’s like a dead leg that’s dragged on a little bit longer than we thought, so we’ll see how he is,” Howe said.
Miley has not featured since Newcastle’s 1-1 draw away to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and has missed the last three matches against Liverpool, Manchester City and Brentford.
There is also guarded hope surrounding Anthony Gordon, who is recovering from a hamstring issue sustained during the defeat at Manchester City.
The winger was forced to sit out Saturday’s 2-3 loss to Brentford, but Howe suggested there is a chance he could be involved if his condition improves significantly during today’s checks.
“Gordon we’ll make a check on today and see how he’s progressing, hopefully a big improvement in him,” Howe explained.
Defensive absences and Joelinton ruled out
While there may be some positive movement elsewhere, Howe confirmed that Joelinton will not travel with the squad.
The Brazilian midfielder continues to struggle with a groin problem and has not featured since the 2-0 home defeat to Aston Villa last month.
“Joelinton won’t make the trip,” Howe said.
The injury list extends further in defence, where Fabian Schär remains unavailable after being seen on crutches at St James’ Park over the weekend.
He will miss out again, alongside Tino Livramento and Emil Krafth, both of whom are still sidelined. The continued absence of senior defenders presents an ongoing challenge for Newcastle as they attempt to manage a congested schedule.
