An unexpected night at Mestalla has sharpened doubts over Carvajal’s future with the club captain ditched for two other right backs against Valencia

Dani Carvajal’s future at Real Madrid has come under sharper scrutiny after a night that made his marginalisation impossible to ignore.

Fully fit and named in the squad, the club captain was left on the sidelines throughout the match. David Jiménez was selected to start at right-back, a call that signalled confidence in youth and continuity rather than experience.

As the match wore on, the situation became more striking. Carvajal did not warm up once and remained on the bench, watching events unfold, before the coaching staff opted to introduce Trent Alexander-Arnold with 14 minutes remaining. The captain’s night ended without a single step towards the touchline.

Carvajal appeared genuinely taken aback by his non-involvement, cutting a shocked figure as the substitutions passed him by.

This was not careful load management or a gradual return from injury. He had medical clearance and availability, yet no role whatsoever in the competitive plan.

The absence has sharpened questions that have lingered for weeks. Carvajal has struggled with fitness issues this season, but his recovery had already been completed.

In recent matches he has found himself drifting further from the centre of the conversation, while alternatives have been prioritised. That shift has been interpreted by many around the club as a sign that the discussion is no longer about health, but about sporting preference.

A captain facing uncertainty behind the scenes

Carvajal’s importance to Real Madrid is not easily measured by minutes alone. He has been a constant presence through multiple Champions League triumphs and remains a vocal leader within the squad.

One option that has quietly entered the conversation is a move to Qatar. The links are not purely sporting. His close friendship with Joselu, who is currently plying his trade at Al-Gharafa, offers a familiar pathway, and the personal bond runs deeper than most. Their wives are sisters, creating a family connection that would make relocation significantly easier.

A return from long-term injury

Dani Carvajal’s recent injury history explains why caution continues to surround his workload. On October 2024, the Real Madrid right-back suffered a severe knee injury, tearing his anterior cruciate ligament along with the external collateral ligament and popliteal tendon.

The rehabilitation process was painstaking, and he did not return to competitive action until July 9 2025, marking a recovery period of 277 days.

Further complications followed his comeback. On September 27 last year, Carvajal picked up a soleus muscle injury in the same right leg, sidelining him for around a month.

Then, after the Clásico against Barcelona on October 26, medical examinations revealed the presence of a “loose body” in the previously operated knee, raising fresh concerns about the joint’s stability.

It now remains to be seen if head coach Álvaro Arbeloa has a plan to reintegrate the club captain into the side, or if he is focusing on the future with David Jiménez and Alexander-Arnold.
